Barney is one of the most unique horses we’ve had all year! Check out the dapples on this guy.😍 He is a 4-year-old, 16.1–16.2hh Gypsy Vanner/Belgian cross gelding. This is one of our first experiences with this cross, and he has quickly become a barn favorite. Barney possesses so many desirable qualities that are increasingly hard to find. He rides English, Western, and bareback, and he even lays down on command! He has the perfect build—not too tall, yet substantial and sturdy enough for riders of all sizes. And did I mention athletic? Despite his thicker build, this guy has serious talent and scope over fences!
The trail is where Barney truly shines. Don’t let his age fool you—he will confidently lead through just about anything. He has crossed bridges, navigated ditches, tackled steep banks into water, and handled countless trail obstacles with ease. He loves to swim, thrives on adventure, and genuinely enjoys cross-country jumping. He has a confident, athletic style both to and over fences, and while he is still green to the job, he has consistently impressed us with his natural ability. He has tidy knees, excellent scope, and all the bravery needed for the tougher questions. Barney has logged many solo trail miles and remains confident, steady, and dependable wherever he goes. We could easily see him excelling as a fox hunter or eventing prospect!
In the arena, Barney is incredibly fun and straightforward to ride. While he is not yet a finished schoolmaster due to his age, he is progressing beautifully and is very impressive for a young horse. Naturally balanced in both directions, he is continuing to develop softness, suppleness, and responsiveness to the leg. He offers walk-to-canter transitions, maintains a lovely rhythm, and has a comfortable, easy-to-sit canter. He carries himself well, has a forward-thinking attitude, and displays attractive movement. He has even packed beginner riders around without becoming upset by mistakes. We could see him being the perfect husband horse for leisurely hacks, or a wonderful partner for an adult amateur or junior rider working with a trainer.
Around the barn, Barney is a pleasure in every way. He enjoys attention, doesn’t mind being pampered, and seems to appreciate a good spa day! He stands quietly for grooming, tacking, the farrier, veterinarian, and dentist. He is well-mannered in his stall, gets along well with others in turnout, and loads easily into the trailer. He has traveled off property many times and always handles new experiences with confidence.
