Meet ✨Dexter✨! This big boy is a 6-year-old, 16.3–17hh PerchX gelding. He is incredibly eye-catching, covered in dapples with a long, flowing tail that reaches the ground. He always wears the sweetest expression! He’s broke to ride Western and English and has also been started in harness. This handsome boy will make someone an incredibly fun and versatile partner.
Under saddle, Dexter has a solid walk, trot, and canter in both directions in the arena. He’s sturdy, sensible, and well-balanced. He’s an easy horse to ride—right in the perfect in-between of whoa and go—and he’s responsive to both seat and voice aids. For a bigger build, he carries himself very well and shows surprising athleticism over fences. He’ll happily pop over crossrails and solid fences, and he has schooled up to 2’6” with scope for more. He’s also been cross-country schooling and never hesitated at a thing—he even handled the ditch combination beautifully without batting an eye.
On the trail, Dexter has plenty of miles and truly enjoys being out. He keeps his steady demeanor and is happy to go anywhere you put him in the group. He gets along well with other horses and doesn’t mind if one rides up a little close. He’s been trailered out to several local trail systems and always behaves perfectly. He also went to multiple hunter paces this fall and jumped everything confidently. He would be a fun one to take out fox hunting. He’ll cross water, navigate tight wooded paths, and lope across open fields—he’s simply a fun, enjoyable partner to ride.
Dexter had one home before coming to us, and understandably took some time to settle into our barn. He can be nervous on the ground, but he never acts out or becomes naughty—he just needs someone patient to give him reassurance, hold his hand, and help build his confidence. He truly bonds with “his person,” and he’s funny in that he relaxes the moment you get on his back; it’s like his worries melt away under saddle. The world can feel big and scary for him, and we don’t hold that against him.
He stands in crossties or a straight tie for grooming and tacking. In true draft fashion, he needs continued work with picking up his feet and currently requires stocks for shoeing. We are continuing to work on this until he leaves our care, and he’s already made leaps and bounds of progress. While he is likely suitable for a beginner rider in the saddle, he should go to someone with at least some experience to help guide him on the ground and continue building his confidence.
Dexter is a genuinely incredible young horse with a bright future, and we’re committed to finding him the great home he deserves.
